30 US Congressmen address President Trump with a letter in support of Georgia

30 US Congressmen have addressed President Donald Trump with a letter to celebrate the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Georgia and the US and a strong strategic partnership between the two countries, - says the press service of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia.

The letter, initiated by Ted Possa (Republic from the state of Texas) and Gerald Connoly (Democratfrom the state of Virginia), co-chairs of the Group of Friends of Georgia, represents another clear example of the US bipartisan support to Georgia. The letter is signed both by the Republican and Democrat Congressmen.
The letter reaffirms US support for Georgia's sovereignty and territorial integrity.

In addition, the Congressmen call on the President to start negotiations on free trade agreement with Georgia and to deepen a high level dialogue on trade and investment issues for this purpose. The Congressmen also call on the US President to continue supporting Georgia's accession to NATO. The letter emphasizes the strong strategic partnership between our countries and the need for the US to further deepen this partnership.

"For 25 years Georgia has continued to strengthen democratic institutions. Georgia has achieved significant progress through strengthening institutions, reducing regulations, fighting corruption and simplifying the tax system. Georgia's achievements are even more valuable in light of the ongoing military aggression from Russia. The Russian army invaded Georgia in 2008 and occupied 20% of the territory of Georgia. The Russian army continues the creeping occupation of the territory of Georgia and violates human rights on the occupied territories and its neighboring areas," the letter reads.

According to the letter, for more than 25 years Georgia has been a trusted strategic partner of the United States of America. “In December 2016, the Parliament adopted a resolution that stresses that the US is the main strategic partner and ally of Georgia. In September 2016, the US House of Representatives approved a resolution initiated by co-chairs of the Friends of Georgia, Gerald Connolly and Ted Pau, which demonstrates strong support of the United States for Georgia's territorial integrity and sovereignty," the letter reads.

"We reiterate our bipartisan commitment to support Georgia and call upon the US administration to strengthen strategic relations with Georgia. It is crucial the US to send a strong message that we are standing beside Georgia, just as the Georgian people did for us", - says the joint letter of the Republican and Democratic Congressmen.
