In Georgia ‘the next steps require engagement and an end to the political deadlock, not further punitive legal action’, Liberal International President of Honour and ALDE Party President Hans van Baalen writes to newly appointed Prime Minister Gharibashvili.
"An open letter to Prime Minister Irakli Gharibashvili
Dear Irakli Garibashvili, dear prime minister,
The resignation of Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia last Friday is a clear indication that a practical resolution to the post-election crisis in Georgia is now more urgent than ever - the next steps require engagement and an end to the political deadlock, not further punitive legal action against members of the opposition.
I am a liberal and I am pro-Georgia.
As the president of honour of Liberal International and president of the Alliance of Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party I can assure you that our continent needs a strong, more democratic Georgia. A Georgia where dissenting voices are heard and political differences resolved in parliament and not through the courts following the arbitrary arrest of opposition figures.
Now is the time for de-escalation and dialogue not further recrimination.
Ahead of the visit of liberal EU Council President, Charles Michel next week, I urge the Georgian Dream to reopen negotiations with the opposition and to work together to set a date to ensure a new round of free, fair, and transparent elections.
Sincerely,
Hans van Baalen
President of Honour,
Liberal International President,
Alliance for Liberals and Democrats for Europe Party"
