The statement also reads that Nick Melia’s case clearly illustrates the unlawful methods used by the Georgian Dream to retain power, thus posing a risk to Georgia’s democratic future.
“The Prosecutor’s Office of Georgia under Ivanishvili’s control appealed to the Parliament which does not represent the will of the Georgian people, to receive consent on Nick Melia’s arrest.
We, the democratic opposition parties of Georgia, consider this and other decisions targeting Nick Melia as an illicit fight against political opponents that has nothing in common with justice or the rule of law.
It is cynical and absurd to impose a bail on a politician who has not left the country even when facing an immediate threat of imprisonment and who has already requested the termination of his parliamentary mandate himself. The case of Nick Melia clearly illustrates the unlawful methods used by the Georgian Dream to retain power, thus posing a risk to Georgia’s democratic future.
By imprisoning Nick Melia or propagating the preparation of his arrest through various media sources the government only provokes further political polarization.
The Georgian authorities must stop the criminal prosecution of its political opponents, fulfill the 8 March agreement, release the political prisoner Giorgi Rurua, and continue dialogue with opposition to reach a compromise on snap elections and new electoral rules.”
